SAT topic
Linear equations
Slope-intercept form and what m and b mean.
Learning goals
- Rewrite a linear equation to identify slope and intercept.
- Use two points to find the slope of a line.
Explanation
A linear equation can often be rearranged into a form such as y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting the coordinates in different orders in the numerator and denominator.
- Calling b the slope because it is the first number you see in a word problem.
Practice
If 2x + 7 = 19, what is the value of x?

Take your time—this is practice, not a test.
Quick review
- 01Isolate y if you need slope or intercept.
- 02Write rise over run with consistent point order.
- 03Check the intercept by plugging in x = 0.
