SAT Reading and Writing / Information and Ideas
SAT topic
Evidence
Support from the exact part of the text.
Learning goals
- Locate the sentence that actually supports a claim.
- Prefer quoted or paraphrased text over outside knowledge.
Explanation
For an evidence-based question, look for the exact part of the passage that supports the answer rather than choosing the option that merely sounds reasonable.
Common mistakes
- Selecting a sentence that is on the same topic but does not prove the claim.
- Using what you already know about the subject instead of the passage.
Practice
A paragraph presents a claim and then introduces evidence that contradicts it. Which type of transition is most likely appropriate between the claim and the evidence?
