Lesson

Ideology, occupation, and mass violence

Wartime states used ideology to justify extreme violence.

Learning goals

  • Connect political ideology to wartime policy.
  • Explain why civilians became targets in twentieth-century conflict.

Explanation

The world wars were also ideological wars. Fascist, militarist, liberal-democratic, and communist states offered competing stories about who belonged and who could be destroyed. Those stories shaped occupation policy, propaganda, and the treatment of minorities.

Industrial killing and bureaucratic organization made mass violence more possible. Genocide, forced labor, aerial bombing, and famine were not accidents on the edge of war; they were choices made by states and armies. When you write about this unit, name the perpetrators, the targeted group, and the goal of the policy.

Key terms

  • genocide. A coordinated attempt to destroy a people, in whole or in part, because of identity.
  • occupation. Military and administrative control of a territory by a foreign power during or after war.

Common mistakes

  • Using vague phrases such as 'things got bad' instead of naming policy and responsibility.
  • Treating ideology as decoration rather than a cause of targeting civilians.
