Lesson

East Asia

Song China, bureaucracy, and neighboring states.

Explanation

China under the Song dynasty had a large, sophisticated bureaucracy supported by Confucian ideas. Economic growth was encouraged by innovations in agriculture, commerce, and urban life. The civil-service examination system helped connect political office to education in the Confucian tradition.

Outside China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam developed political systems influenced by Chinese institutions while adapting them to local conditions. Japan, for example, developed warrior-centered political institutions that differed from China's bureaucratic structure.
