Lesson

Disorders and treatment as systems, not labels

Diagnosis is a starting description; treatment is a planned change.

Learning goals

  • Describe a psychological disorder as a pattern that causes distress or impairment.
  • Contrast a biological treatment approach with a psychotherapy approach.

Explanation

A psychological disorder is more than a bad week. Clinicians look for a pattern of thinking, feeling, or behaving that is deviant from the person's cultural context and that causes distress or gets in the way of life. Labels can help people find care; they can also stigmatize if they become the only story about a person.

Treatments come in families. Medication and other biological approaches target brain and body processes. Psychotherapies—cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, and others—target thoughts, learning, or relationships. Many people use a combination. On the exam, match the method to the mechanism instead of listing famous names.

Key terms

  • psychological disorder. A pattern of thought, emotion, or behavior that is atypical for the context and that causes distress or impairment.
  • psychotherapy. A structured conversation-based treatment that aims to change thinking, behavior, or relationships.

Common mistakes

  • Diagnosing a friend from one symptom in a textbook list.
  • Assuming medication and talk therapy are rivals rather than tools with different targets.

Answer explanation

What two conditions keep a pattern from being 'just a personality quirk' in this unit?

Answer. It causes significant distress or it impairs important parts of life, relative to the person's cultural context.

Disorder is about harm and function, not about being unusual for its own sake.
